The Big O and The Big O II

I enjoyed this 1999 anime wonderfully. The 26 episode series was a nice blend of the nostalgic and the futuristic.

At the start of the story, some unknown event 40 years ago has robbed the citizens of Paradigm City of their memories. The main protagonist, Roger Smith reminds me strongly of the Batman series I used to watch as a child. The powerful gadgets he uses with its outdated appearance certainly had me laughing at the irony. It was a wonderful blast from the past.

The other part I liked was Roger's relationship with his android companion, Dorothy. Their now you see it, now you don't love affair was rather sweet and funny. While Roger appears to be a jerk most of the time to Dorothy, he's really rather protective of her and is always there for her whenever she's in danger. Similarly, vice versa. As an android, Dorothy appears to be almost emotionless. Yet, she has rescued Roger just as frequently.

My only complain is the ending and the big mystery past. After all that suspenseful build up, it was a let down not to be able to figure out what was going on.

Still, I'd definitely recommend this series to mecha fans who'd like to reminisce about the past.
