Bleach Season 3
Bleach Season 3 continues the story of Ichigo Kurosaki, a 15 year old substitute Soul Reaper who has breached Soul Society's walls with his friends to save Rukia Kuchiki. Ichigo has finally fought his way to where Rukia is being held imprisoned, pending her execution for breaking Soul Society's laws, but before he can attempt a rescue, Yoruichi Shihoin knocks him out and flees with him. When he awakens, Yoruichi explains that Ichigo is not yet strong enough to fight any of the captains but if he trains for another 3 days, he can be. Thus, Ichigo begins his training to attain the bankai, the final stage of his zanpakuto and enhance his spiritual power.
Ichigo finishes his training just in time to rescue Rukia, whose execution date has been moved up. And from then on, we have Ichigo and some unexpected allies squaring off as the Captains' of Soul Society divides into 2 camps, those who would help Ichigo save Rukia and those who are intent on seeing the execution carried out. In the course of the battles we learn something more about Yoruichi and Kisuke Urahara's background. Both Yoruichi and Kisuke were former Soul Reapers, holding the ranks of Captain no less.
Ichigo defeats Byakuya Kuchiki but there is of course more to what is going on. Toshiro Hitsugaya, the Captain of the 10th division who has suspected some conspiracy, discovers that all members of the Central 46 which is their ruling council slain. Apparently, the real mastermind behind the plot is Sosuke Aizen. He and his co-conspirators plotted to have Rukia killed in order to obtain a powerful object hidden within Rukia by Kisuke. Aizen and the other traitors to Soul Society escapes while the members of Soul Society, Ichigo and his friends can only watch.
At the end, Soul Society recognizes their debt to Ichigo and officially recognizes him as a substitute Soul Reaper while Rukia decides to stay behind.
Bleach Season 3
If I have any major gripes, it is these. The first, that we don't get to see all the fights. We may see glimpses at the start or the end result but no more. I understand of course that the focus is on Ichigo, but it would have been interesting to see how the 2 Captains fared against their Captain Commander or how Rangiku Matsumoto defeated Izuru Kira. And watching Kenpachi who is fight crazy has proven to be rather interesting as he also has some of the best and funniest lines in the anime. The second is the strange and unfathomable side trip the anime took to show the going ons of Ichigo's family. It was hardly relevant to the plot and distracts from the story. And finally, Rukia's incomprehensible decision to accept her execution without a peep. I'd expected more from the heroine of the anime instead of just seating around disheartened while telling those who came to rescue her that she deserves to die. The explanation that is given is that she believes this because she had killed her Lieutenant, Kaien Shiba whom she greatly admired and respected, because he had been possessed by a Hollow. But this simply does not take. This event hardly happened recently and she showed plenty of fighting spirit in Season 1, so why this "give up" attitude now ?
Still, all in all a wonderful watch. I'm really looking forward to watching the next season.
