Flame of Recca
Flame of Recca tells 16-year old Recca Hanabishi's story. Recca has always been crazy about ninjas and even styles himself as such. But it is not until his meeting with the mysterious Kage Houshi that he discovers that he really is a ninja, a descendant of the once powerful Hokage clan.
At first it appears as if Kage Houshi is an enemy as she continues to put Recca, his friends or school mates in dangerous situations or pit them against each other. Later on he learns that she is actually his long-lost mother. 400 years ago the Hokage were feared for their creation of elemental weapons which allows its owners to gain control over the elements or acquire magical abilities. When the warlike Oda Nobunaga attempted to gain these weapons, the Hokage chose to fight without them to prevent Nobunaga from gaining these weapons. Thus, the Hokage were destroyed. In attempting to save her year-old son Recca, Kagero used the Hokage's forbidden time-manipulation techniques to send Recca into the future. His older half-brother Kurei was accidentally sent along as he attacked Recca in that moment. Kagero in turn was cursed to live her live as an immortal, remaining the same even as those she loves grows old and dies. She has spent the last 400 year searching for her son and would have been content to let him live his life in peace except for the fact that those who would misuse the Hokage's elemental weapons have once again appeared. In order to help him realize his potential as a Hokage flame master, she engineered the fights.
Upon learning the truth of his past, Recca and his friends agree to join the fight for their own respective reasons. Recca aims to find a way to release his mother from her curse as well as protect Yanagi Sakoshita who possesses healing abilities. Fuko Kirisawa and Domon Ishijima who are both Recca's childhood friends and rivals join as they do not wish to lose to Recca. Tokiya Mikagami wishes to avenge the murder of his older sister, Mifuyu Mikagami and protect Yanagi which bears a striking resemblance to his dead sister. His sister had apparently been killed for the elemental weapon, Ensui which is a family heirloom and Tokiya believes that by helping Recca he will be able to find his sister's killers. Along the way they gain the help of Kaoru Koganei who was once a member of the enemy group but becomes disillusioned when he finds their methods distasteful.
The enemy Recca and his friends fight are lead by Kurei. The 20-year old Kurei had formed a band of fighters which he names Uruha and they serves his adoptive father, Mori Koran. The rich and powerful, Mori Koran will stop at nothing to gain what he seeks, immortality and he believes he can achieve that by dissecting Yanagi. Thus, they fight it out in the Ura Butō Satsujin, an underground tournament where elemental weapon masters risk their lives.
Flame of Recca is an exciting watch. My favourite character however is young Kaoru Koganei who even in the midst of fighting deadly battles still exudes childhood innocence. When he first battles Tokiya, he successfully disarms Tokiya but rather than press his advantage is puzzled when Tokiya does not go and retrieve his weapon. My least favourite however is the heroine, Yanagi. Her character seems rather weak and never seems to do anything except to cry with either grief or joy. Flame of Recca is watchable for its fights and no more than that.
