revolutionary road starts leonardo dicaprio and kate winslet, and was released in late 2008. its a movie based off a book by yates, and [not] suprisingly enough, winslet's husband directed the movie as well. now my first concern about the movie was: will it live up to standard? you've got to admit that when titanic came out over ten years ago, leo and kate were a box office bomb shell and here they are, at it again ten years later. so it makes one wonder: will the audience get the same effect and passion from the actors like they did before?

the answer is yes.

i've read other people's reviews on the movie -- some enjoy it, some don't. its all personal preference. i for one, highly enjoyed it not because its one of those happy go lucky every one falls in love and every one is a winner by the end of it kind of move. no, not at all. quite the opposite actually. considering the two havent worked together in tears, they did a magnificent job of creating the characters frank and april wheeler: a young couple who have fallen hopelessly onto fantasies about what frank calls his “own exceptional merit” that haunt the couple; its a delusion they cling to like a lifeline and that registers as mutual neurosis and a symptom of some vague, larger social ill.

through out the movie, they don’t have much sympathy for each other, and forewarning to the viwers: the emotion you will probably feel most acutely is pity -- for the wheelers and perhaps even for the man who created them and(the author, yates) who has brought them to such merciless life.

the movie itself is heartbreakingly haunting. its romantically morbid. not in a blood and guts kind of way, but in a slow demise to the point of no return kind of morbib. there are scenes where you think the wheelers are perfectly happy with their marriage again after how ever many fights they've had before that day, but in the long run you come to find it was all just a facade, along with the couples lives coming apart at the seams.

the thing about the it is that so many people can compare themselves to the couple. about losing themselves and who they are, to settle down and have a few kids thinking 'this is the rest of my life.' and so many people who are caught in this like the wheelers were, attempt to claw to get out but end up digging themselves deeper in the hole that is inevitable.

i can recall during one of the last few scenes where april puts bath towels down on the bathroom floor and closes the door (if you've seen the movie, you know what i'm talking about), and i remember saying to myself that i hope she doesnt kill herself. i wouldnt have been suprised though if she had because you can feel the raw intensity and emotion between april and frank, and the hurt they both had consuming them. you can feel how hurt april was at the remarks frank had said the night before, therefore doing something about it. and you can see on frank's face prior to the bathroom incident when the couple are eating breakfast that hes walking on eggshells since he doesnt want to upset april anymore. he lets his guard down a bit before he leaves the house for work but all that comes crashing down around him during the hospital scene.

shep and milly (the neighbors that live next door to the wheelers) are minor roles in the movie, but when he runs into the hospital to attempt to comfort frank he finds out what happened then tells frank hes going to get him some coffee. it cuts to another scene where shep is next to the coffee machine bawling because in fact, really did love april and meant it when he told her.

the trysts between april and shed/frank and the secertary girl were well played out. they were unapologietic, full of lust, and a big eff you to other one for bringing them that far down into such an unhappy marriage and life. the fighting is also what made the movie; the couple are so down and out but as the intenisity builds up so do the vulgar language and hurting words along with chair throwing and fists into the wall. sad to say, THAT is where you see the couple at their best and come to life.

if you're looking for something real and full of life -depsite the characters not really possessing that attribute - then i would highly recommened this movie. its one thats going to stick with you for months or even years after you've long stopped watching.
