The 25-episode Spiral anime centers around 16-year old child prodigy Ayumu Narumi. Ayumu, like his older brother Kiyotaka is a genius. But whereas Kiyotaka achieved his true potential by becoming a world class pianist at the age of 10 and then being hailed as The Great Detective by his fellow police officers at the age of 20, Ayumu gave up on himself when he realized that not only could he could not surpass his brother's achievements but whatever he does is but a copy of his brother's achievements.
At the start of the anime, Ayumu is framed for an attempted murder and is thus dragged into the mystery of the cursed Blade Children. Ayumu clears his name with the help of 17-year old Hiyono Yuizaki and his own superb reasoning skills. Hiyono is the polar opposite of Ayumu in terms of character, but proofs indispensable to him with her hacking abilities and network of information which is better even than that of the local police force. Though they successfully identify the perpetrator of the crime, Ayumu is surprised by a mention of The Blade Children. 2 years ago his brother Kiyotaka had disappeared leaving behind only the words that he was investigating the Blade Children.
Over the course of the anime, Ayumu and Hiyono meets some of the Blade Children. At first, it appears as if these Blade Children are determined to kill him for an unknown reason. Ayumu soon realizes that they are testing him. The only explanation given being that Kiyotaka had told them that Ayumu is possibly the only one able to save them from the Curse of the Blade Children.
With every case or challenge that Ayumu faces, the mystery surrounding the Blade Children, the Hunters and Kiyotaka's disappearance deepends. At the end of the anime, these questions are still left unanswered. The only change is that Ayumu seems to have come to a realization that there is hope in overcoming fate as long as one continues to strive.
